Carrie Mae Weems. The Heart of the Matter
BRH+ designs the set-up of the exhibition “Carrie Mae Weems: The Heart of the Matter”. The exhibition celebrates one of the most influential voices in contemporary photography. An artist of extraordinary political and aesthetic intensity, Carrie Mae Weems has built a body of work that lucidly addresses crucial issues such as cultural identity, systemic racism, sexism and class dynamics.
The extensive and incisive retrospective is curated by Sarah Meister, former head of the photography department at MoMA New York, in collaboration with Aperture, and part of the EXPOSED official program, tracing the career of the great American photographer through both iconic series and new productions, including a never-before-seen commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo.
The set-up designed by BRH+ originates from listening deeply to Weems’ work, and from a desire to create an intimate and reflective experience. The project develops around a visual and spatial narrative that accompanies the visitor along a chronological and thematic path, conceived as a journey through the various seasons of the author’s artistic research.
Material and color choices give way to the strength of the images, favoring calm and deep tones that dialogue with the black and white of the photography. The installation is structured through a sequence of environments that alternate density and breath, recollection and openness, according to a measured spatial grammar calibrated to the semantic intensity of the images. Great attention is paid to the design of the light, which writes the space acting as a compositional and dramaturgical element, defining thresholds of attention and suggesting a slowed-down and meditative reading.
Two immersive installations complete the path, making explicit the theatrical vocation of Weems’ work and strengthening the link between work, body and space.
